We're talking 5 - 10 dozen decoys...
Hunting snow geese?
Forget about it, you might end up with 20+ dozen in a field!
So it's safe to say that decoys are important to a goose hunter!
This article will walk you through the best options for goose decoys and which one's are right for you.
Types of Goose Decoys
Goose decoys come in a wide range of styles for different situations.
Here's an overview of the main types of goose decoys
Full Body Decoys
This is what most peoiple think of whent htey think of goose decoys
Full body decoys are exactly what they sound like, decoys that are the full size and shape of a goose.
Mostly used for field hunting, full bodies can also see action in shallow water hunts where they can stay eithe ron the shore or in water that stays belwo the height of their stakes.
Floating Decoys
Floating decoys are simple the water equivalent of full body decoys...
They're the same size as geese, but they floating on the water.
Pretty straight forward
Silhouette Decoys
Silhouette decoys are a popular style of decoy for adding extra volume to goose decoy spreads.
They're basically a 2-D version of a goose decoy, from the side they look like a goose, but they don't take up as much space as a full body decoy.
Silos are less expensive and take up less space than full body decoys so it's easy to add a few dozen to a spread.
Most brands can fit 5 or 6 dozen into one silo bag, so they're easy to carry and set up.
The obvious downside here is that they don't look as realistic as full bodies, so sometimes it's better to mix then in around full bodies than to use them by themselves.
Wind Sock Decoys
Windsock decoys are the next evolution from silhouette decoys.
They're what they sound like, a plastic sock that makes the shape of a goose.
Like silos, windsocks are liight and pack down extremely well so they're easy to add bulk to a deocy spread.
The big up side from silso is that they have a 3-D shape when viewed from abouve by birds.
On top of that, they have more movement in the wind than silos do, which helps add a layer of realism to your spread.
Best way to use these is to mix them in around other types of decoys, same as silos.
Most brands also make these on taller stakes so you can use them to help hide your layout blind.
Motion Decoys
Motion decoys are what adds the most realism to your spread.
It doesn't matter if you're hunting in a field or over water, motion decoys are what finishes wary birds in the late season.
For geese, motion decoys full in the same categories as duck motion decoys except for one...
Geese HATE spinning wing decoys.
Instead they prefer flapping decoys, going along side the standards of water splashers and swimmers.
